Healthy Self-esteem vs. Poor Self-esteem...
People with poor self-esteem often rely on how they are doing in the present to determine how they feel about themselves. They need positive external experiences to counteract the negative feelings and thoughts that constantly plague them. Even then, the good feeling (from a good grade, or pat on the back, etc.) can be temporary. Healthy self-esteem is based on the ability to assess ourselves accurately (to know ourselves) and still be able to accept and to value ourselves, unconditionally. A healthy self-esteem means being able to realistically acknowledge our strengths and limitations (part of being human), and at the same time accepting ourselves as worthy and worthwhile without any conditions or reservations. If you have good healthy self-esteem, then you are smart enough to make your own decisions. You will value your safety and your feelings and your health. Everything about yourself! With a healthy self-esteem you will know that every part of you is worth caring for and protecting, including healthy living.
